You have a container number, but the tracker shows no result. First confirm where you are searching. A shipping line tracks the ocean journey, while a terminal shows the container’s activity at that facility. Customs clearance is another process. Looking in the wrong place can make a valid shipment seem missing.
Is the reference number correct?
Check the container number against the Bill of Lading and booking documents. Copy it without extra spaces or a swapped letter or digit. If you only have a Bill of Lading or booking number, select a search that accepts that reference. Some systems do not recognize every reference type. Start with Maalbardaar shipment tracking and use the number available on your shipping papers.
Are you checking the correct carrier and terminal?
The carrier may show a vessel arrival before the terminal records the container as discharged. Confirm the destination port and terminal on the arrival notice or carrier update. KICT is at Karachi Port; QICT is at Port Qasim. They are different terminals.
Use the KICT tracking page for a shipment assigned to KICT and the QICT tracking page for QICT. If you do not know the terminal, begin with the Pakistan terminal directory or the Karachi Port tracking page. KICT’s official enquiry page provides container and BL enquiry options.
Has the shipment reached that stage yet?
If the vessel is still at sea or the container has not been discharged, a terminal search may have nothing to show. Check the carrier’s latest milestone first. A tracking update can also arrive after the physical event. Ask the carrier or forwarder for the latest confirmed status if a promised milestone is overdue.
What if the container has arrived but cannot be released?
Arrival and release are different. Check whether customs assessment, duty payment, a shipping line delivery order, examination or terminal charges remain pending. If the Goods Declaration is delayed, use our PSW import declaration guide and PSID payment troubleshooting guide. Our tracking status meanings guide explains common milestones.
What should you send when asking for help?
Share the container or Bill of Lading number, carrier, vessel or voyage if known, destination terminal, screenshot of the last update and the date you expected arrival. Avoid posting shipment references publicly. With these details, your logistics team can check the right carrier, terminal and clearance stage.
What is the difference between a container number and a BL number?
A standard ISO container identifier has four letters followed by seven digits, including the check digit. It identifies the equipment. A Bill of Lading number identifies a transport document and uses the carrier’s format. A booking number identifies the reservation. These references are related, but they are not interchangeable in every tracker.
Check which field the website accepts. For a consolidated shipment, ask whether the reference is a house BL issued by your forwarder or a master BL issued by the ocean carrier. The carrier may not recognize a house BL. Your forwarder can provide the appropriate reference or report the consolidation status.
What if the vessel has arrived but the container has not appeared?
A vessel arrival is a ship-level event. Your container may still await discharge, may be assigned to another terminal, or may not be on the vessel you expected. Confirm the container’s latest carrier event and the terminal named on the arrival notice. Do not assume that a vessel’s location proves your container’s location.
For KICT shipments, our KICT tracking guide explains the terminal search. For Port Qasim, use the QICT container tracking guide. The port and terminal track-and-trace guide helps you distinguish those locations.
Why might the ETA change repeatedly?
An estimated time of arrival can move when the vessel’s schedule changes or a connecting service is delayed. Record when each estimate was updated and which source supplied it. When cargo changes vessel, confirm the next vessel and voyage rather than following only the original ship.
Read our import shipment track-and-trace guide to follow the full movement. For a China import, compare the expected route against the China to Pakistan shipping guide, then verify the actual booking with the carrier.
What if the tracker says discharged, released or gate out?
These events describe different stages:
- Discharged: The container has been unloaded from the vessel. Confirm clearance and delivery requirements separately.
- Released: Check who issued the release and what it covers. Customs, shipping line and terminal releases can be separate.
- Gate out: The container has left the terminal. Ask the transport team for the final delivery status.
- Empty returned: This equipment event is separate from the cargo delivery. Confirm the carrier has recorded the return when detention is a concern.
For charges connected with a KICT pickup, use our KICT invoice and container charges guide. Confirm the actual deadline and invoice with the terminal or carrier; a tracking event alone does not determine every charge.
What should you do if two trackers disagree?
Compare the reference, event date, update time and meaning of each status. One system may show the planned arrival while another shows the actual discharge. Save the conflicting updates and ask the responsible carrier, terminal or forwarder to confirm the most recent event.
Ask a specific question: “Has this container been discharged at QICT?” is easier to resolve than “Where is my cargo?” Our international shipping with tracking guide explains the broader workflow, and the Maalbardaar dashboard overview shows how shipment information can be organized.
Frequently asked questions
Does no result mean my container is lost?
No result alone does not establish that. Verify the number, carrier, terminal and shipment stage, then request confirmation from the party responsible for the movement.
Can I use tracking to confirm customs clearance?
Use the declaration status and your authorized clearing team’s confirmation for customs. A carrier movement tracker may not show the full clearance process.
Should I share my BL number publicly to get help?
Send it through the provider’s support channel or your authorized logistics team. Share only the details needed to identify the shipment.
Need one place to follow the shipment? Track it with Maalbardaar or create an account to manage more than one shipment.
